Students of University of Gonder, Ethiopia have started protest against the University Administration and the regime in power. The protest began three days ago but turned deadly as students attempted to leave the campus today, 28 November 2011. According to sources in the University, the protest was sparked due to food poison that caused health problems on many students. However, the protest suddenly turned into a wide protest seeking academic rights, freedom and liberty in the country in general.

 

The death of one student is also reported with some male students missing from the men's dormitories and a large presence of Federal Police in and around both campuses.

 

"The protest was spearheaded and led by students of the Tewodros campus but later were joined by students from Maraki Campus. We have been protesting the whole day until the police came and surrounded both campuses." a student told De Birhan on condition of anonymity.

 

Established half a century ago as Public Health College and Training center, became University of Gonder in 2003 with the emergence of Faculty of Management Science and Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences. 

The University of Gondar consists of one college, College of Medicine and Health Sciences and six faculties; faculty of Business and Economics and, faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences, faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, faculty of Veterinary Medicine, faculty of Engineering and School of Law, all offering regular degree program. In addition, Extension and Summer degree programs are offered by most of the faculties and the college.

UoG has over 20,000 students in both campuses.
